CAN/ULC-S1001 Integrated Systems Testing

Integrated testing of fire protection and life safety systems, with test planning, coordination, documented results and deficiency follow-up.

Noven Consulting provides CAN/ULC-S1001 integrated testing services for fire protection and life safety systems. The work examines how connected systems operate together against the documented design intent.

We help the project team plan the test, coordinate the required participants and record the results. The engagement must identify the integrated testing coordinator (ITC), participating designers and trades, and the responsibilities needed to carry out the agreed testing.

Test planning and coordination

The proposed scope can include:

  • Review of design information and the systems and interfaces to be tested.
  • Preparation of an integrated test plan and coordination of test readiness.
  • Coordination and documentation of the agreed test scenarios.
  • Recording deficiencies and coordinating follow-up or retesting within the engagement.
  • Preparation of the testing report and relevant completion records.

Required system-specific inspections, verifications and trade readiness need to be coordinated with the project team. Their status affects when integrated tests can proceed.

New buildings and changes to existing systems

The reason for testing, applicable standard edition and any ongoing testing obligations must be established for the particular building and jurisdiction. The scope for an alteration depends on the systems affected and the applicable requirements.

The City of Vancouver's integrated-testing bulletin explains the distinction between system integration tests and broader commissioning. It is dated December 2022; the guidance and requirements applicable to the project must be checked before the testing scope is finalized.

Testing reports and certification requirements

A testing report and a ULC certificate are different deliverables. UL's certificate-program information explains the listing and certification arrangements. Where a certificate is required, the proposal identifies the applicable program and the responsible provider.

Information for a testing proposal

Provide the address, building use and stage, systems and interfaces involved, drawings, sequence of operations, existing test plans and reports, the target testing date, and the designer and trade contacts. Include any authority comments about the testing requirement.

For related document assessment see fire protection system review; for operational compliance questions see fire code consulting. Request an integrated-testing proposal with the information currently available.

When should an integrated testing coordinator join the project?

Early appointment allows the integrated testing coordinator to review system interfaces and sequences with the design team. The test plan then identifies scenarios, participants, prerequisite work and reporting requirements in relation to the project’s occupancy schedule.
