Firestopping review and project-specific engineering judgments for penetrations, joints and field conditions in fire-resistance-rated assemblies.
Noven Consulting reviews firestopping details and field conditions for building projects. We help architects, contractors and owners assess how penetrations and joints in fire-resistance-rated assemblies are addressed, and identify conditions that require further technical evaluation.
The review considers the rated wall or floor, the opening or joint, the penetrant, and the proposed firestop system. The proposed detail and installation conditions are compared with the tested-system documentation, including the assembly, penetrant and material limitations.
The agreed engagement can include review of submitted details, assessment of unusual conditions, coordination with the project team and written recommendations or engineering judgments within the defined scope.
An engineering judgment may be considered when the project condition does not match an available tested and listed system. The technical evaluation documents the supporting evidence, deviations and limitations. It remains distinct from fire testing or product certification and follows the applicable professional and authority review requirements. The International Firestop Council's engineering judgment guidance is a useful industry reference.
Provide the assembly construction and required rating, photographs, opening dimensions, penetrant details, proposed materials and available tested-system information. Identify whether the work is proposed or already installed, and include any review comments or requests for clarification.
The proposal will distinguish document review, site review, preparation of an engineering judgment and follow-up work. Changes to the condition may require reassessment. For broader design questions, see building code consulting and fire protection system review. Discuss a firestopping review.

The review uses the rated assembly, penetration or joint detail, proposed products, listed-system information and documented site conditions. Where the condition differs from the tested and listed system, an engineering judgement assesses the specific deviation and records its technical basis.
